Overview

Located at 1253 Burton St SW in Wyoming, Michigan, Tamales Mary is a shining example of authentic Mexican cuisine delivered with heart and simplicity. This unpretentious spot, adjacent to a laundromat, may not catch your eye at first glance, but step inside and you’ll find food that speaks volumes through freshness and bold flavors.

At the core of Tamales Mary’s menu lies the tamale, a traditional dish lovingly crafted using both corn husk and banana leaf wrappings—each gluten-free and embodying the authentic essence of Mexican heritage. The tamales come generously sized, packed with savory fillings like red pork and chorizo, earning praise for their tenderness and balance of seasoning. It’s no surprise that regulars rave about these tamales being some of the biggest and best around.

The menu expands beautifully with dishes like menudo, asada tacos, and 3 quesabirrias served with rich consommé, satisfying cravings for classic Mexican comfort food. The wet burrito deluxe, topped with mild sauce and sour cream, blends layers of flavors that hit the spot for those who favor hearty meals wrapped in flour tortillas. Vegetarian and gluten-free options are thoughtfully included, ensuring a broad appeal.

Dining at Tamales Mary offers a glimpse into homemade Mexican fare, prepared fresh and fast. The friendly, welcoming staff enhance the experience, making every visit feel like a quick trip to a close friend’s kitchen rather than a mere restaurant stop. The ambiance is unassuming yet genuine, catering well to locals, workers on lunch breaks, and lovers of traditional tastes from across Michigan.

One of the standout draws is the taco lunch buffet—an all-you-can-eat feast that delivers variety and value without compromising the quality that Mary is known for. Though tamales are not part of the buffet, the assortment of tacos and sides leaves diners with a satisfying experience. The black bean and cheese tamales, as well as the carnitas, add a comforting layer to the menu’s offerings.

Accessibility and flavor meet in this corner of Wyoming through dishes that feel homemade yet perfected after years of mastery. Whether you’re a local or just passing through Grand Rapids, Tamales Mary is a must-try destination for those craving authentic Mexican cuisine that’s grounded in tradition, freshness, and hearty portions.

With a menu that balances robust, savory meats and fresh vegetarian choices, paired with beverage staples like bottled Coca-Cola, Tamales Mary achieves a harmony that resonates well with families, professionals, and anyone hungry for true Mexican comfort food. It is a humble yet proud culinary gem, inviting guests to slow down and savor each bite.

Very delish food. My only quip would be that the guac was VERY spicy. Surprisingly spicy. More than a kick. I admit, I am a tiny bit of a spice wimp, but it was so spicy I couldn’t finish it. I think it’s great that added their own flare to the guac, but it’s probably not great for kids or spice wimps like me ;) I loved the large portion and the big bag of fresh chips it came with!

I stumbled upon Tamales Mary while driving around looking for a new Mexican spot to try, and what a find! This place is a quick in-and-out style restaurant, but the food and service make it stand out. The staff were very friendly, and everything was made fresh right in front of me. You can tell it’s authentic, with a welcoming atmosphere and food that feels homemade. The building is simple and located next to a laundromat. The inside is older, but don’t let that fool you. The food more than makes up for it! I tried the taco with marinated pork, and it was absolutely delicious…savory, perfectly seasoned, and soooooo full of flavor. The chicken tostada was just as impressive: crunchy, fresh, and loaded with toppings! Just the way I like it. I’ll definitely be back to try more of their menu items. If you’re looking for authentic, flavorful Mexican food with quick and friendly service, Tamales Mary is worth the stop!

Her food is authentic and #YUM! She also offers a lunch buffet, I have not tried it, but it looks good. THANKS TAMALES MARY!! UPDATE… just tried the taco lunch buffet $13.49. A great deal and super delicious! See pics below

This place rules. We order from here at work quite often. Betty la Princesa Dominicana is the absolute best of the best. The tamales con rajas are my favorite, but the pozole is some of the best I have had. I just wish they had some tables and not just booths. 5 of 5 sombreros.

The masa of the tamales was good tasting. The meat was a little spicy despite I requested mild or plain favored tamales. I didn't like that they literally had trays of meat in the lobby area like they were going to do the prep for the tamales off to the side in the lobby. I didn't find that sanitary. I had already ordered before I saw this or I probably wouldn't have purchased. The food was exposed to everyone and the workers were not around it. A friend recommended the place so I stopped. I'm not from here buy decided to stop and try. The prices seemed reasonable for each tamale.
